RAISE THE TITANIC has a shockingly good fansite

RAISE THE TITANIC prompted the first conversation I ever had about DARK SHADOWS.

The 1980 blockbuster adapted one of Clive Cussler's many novels about adventurer Dirk Pitt, played here by Richard Jordan. It was a hell of a cast, one that involved Alec Guinness, Jason Robards, M. Emmet Walsh and, of course, David Selby. I was eight years old at the time and walked out of the theater with my mind on a future career as an oceanic explorer. A few years later I opted, instead, on a future career as a ghostbuster, so don't take that dream too seriously.

After the movie, my mother told me that Selby used to be on a soap opera that featured a vampire and his werewolf cousin. It sounded like the greatest television show ever.

Unfortunately, RAISE THE TITANIC did not launch a new cinematic franchise about Dirk Pitt. The film was a bomb and figured prominently in the first ever Golden Raspberry Awards. Selby was nominated as "Worst Supporting Actor" for the film, but I doubt he was too offended, given that Marlon Brando, Lawrence Olivier and Charles Grodin were also "honored" in that category. That's pretty good company.

Where is all of this going, you're asking? It seems that RAISE THE TITANIC has a fan page. And an unusually good one, at that. Parked over at www.raisethetitanic.com is a pretty thorough tribute to the film, the source novel, the comic strip (?!), soundtrack and ... well, you get the idea. It's a pretty cool site for a movie that's not especially well remembered. You should absolutely check it out.
